Moving U.P. in the World...

Since we're (finally!) caught up in blogging about the last several months, I think it's time to share the news you've all been waiting for...

(...drumroll please...)

We received confirmation recently that Village Missions has asked us to serve in the small town of Watersmeet, Michigan! Watersmeet is located in the Upper Peninsula, about 8 miles from Wisconsin's northern border.

We will be arriving in Watersmeet on Monday, April 3. Please be praying for Chris as he makes contact with the board members from Watersmeet Bible Church which he will be pastoring, and as we are packing and making moving preparations for the end of this month. We are very excited about how the Lord has worked through our time at Valley Community Church with Mark and Donna Archer and is leading us to this new adventure in ministry!

For now, here are a few memorable details about our new church and community:

  • Watersmeet had a population of 428 in town  in 2010 out of 1,417 in the township.
  • The town has one Catholic church and one Protestant church: Watersmeet Bible Church, where we will be serving.
  • Watersmeet Township includes the site of the Lac Vieux Desert Indian Reservation which contributes to a large Native American population in the school (~60%) and in the community.
  • Watersmeet receives an average of 80 inches of snowfall each year.
  • The nearest Walmart is 49 miles away in Minocqua, WI. (Gotta stock up come winter!)
  • The township includes 302 lakes and 241 miles of trout streams.
  • In 2005-2006, an eight-episode documentary, Nimrod Nation, was filmed in Watersmeet about the town and the school's basketball team and was later aired on the Sundance Channel.
  • The school's mascot is the Nimrod, as in:

Genesis 10:8-9 (NIV)Cush was the father[a] of Nimrod, who became a mighty warrior on the earth. He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; that is why it is said, “Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the Lord.”
